BAGI Reports 7% Year-Over-Year Increase in New Home Construction Permits, Indicating Continued Housing Market Resilience

INDIANAPOLIS (August 20, 2025) — The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) reports a 7% YOY increase in single-family building permits across Central Indiana after July 2025, signaling continued momentum in the region’s residential construction market.

According to the latest permit data, 951 new home permits were issued in July 2025, up from 856 in July 2024. The year-over-year growth reflects steady buyer interest and the ongoing adaptability of local builders. This growth comes despite broader economic uncertainties, including interest rate variability and inflation concerns.

“July’s permit activity demonstrates the sustained strength and responsiveness of Central Indiana’s housing market,” said Chris Hancock, CEO of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI). “Builders continue to approach the market with discipline—balancing supply with demand, prioritizing quality, and remaining agile amid economic and regulatory shifts.”

One trend fueling market stability is the increased availability of spec (move-in ready) homes, which are helping to meet buyer demand more efficiently. Builders have leaned into this strategy to maintain momentum and appeal to buyers seeking quicker move-in timelines, especially as housing affordability and borrowing conditions fluctuate.

Indiana’s homebuilders remain focused on navigating key market factors such as interest rate trends, inflationary pressures, labor availability, and evolving local policy. Despite these headwinds, the overall outlook remains optimistic, supported by strategic planning, buyer demand, and regional growth. Central Indiana continues to attract new residents and homebuyers, reinforcing its reputation as a desirable, resilient housing market.
