INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 24, 2026) — The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) reports continued year-over-year growth in single-family building permit activity across Central Indiana, with revised July figures strengthening the region’s year-to-date performance. July’s permit total has been revised from 978 to 1,023 permits, changing the month’s previously reported year-over-year increase from 1% to 6%. With the revision, Central Indiana recorded 6,454 permits through July, a 4% increase compared to the same period in 2025. August continued the positive trend, with 953 permits issued compared to 890 in August 2025, a 7% year-over-year increase.
The local gains come as national housing conditions remain under pressure. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), existing home sales fell 2% in August, marking the third consecutive monthly decline. Single-family construction spending also fell 3.2% in July and was down 6.5% year over year, as elevated mortgage rates, construction costs and affordability challenges continued to constrain buyers and builders nationwide.
“Central Indiana continues to show steady demand even as the broader housing market faces significant challenges,” said Chris Hancock, CEO of BAGI. “The revised July numbers give us a clearer picture of the activity we’ve seen this year, and another year-over-year increase in August shows that builders are continuing to respond to the needs of our growing communities.”
While overall permit activity remains positive, conditions continue to vary throughout the nine-county region. Some areas are experiencing stronger growth while others have seen permit activity decline, reflecting the uneven nature of today’s housing market. Even so, Central Indiana’s overall performance through the summer stands in contrast to national indicators showing softer housing demand and declining single-family construction spending.
“Growth isn’t occurring evenly across every community, and builders are continuing to navigate affordability and cost pressures,” Hancock added. “What we’re seeing is an industry that is adjusting to local demand, making thoughtful decisions and continuing to move housing forward where opportunities exist.”
