INDIANAPOLIS (April 27, 2026) —The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) reports that single-family building permit activity across Central Indiana saw a notable increase in March, helping offset a slower February and pushing overall year-to-date activity ahead of last year’s pace. The nine-county region recorded 897 permits in March 2026, compared to 808 permits in March 2025, reflecting an 11% year-over-year increase. Year-to-date totals now stand at 2,309 permits in 2026, compared to 2,231 permits at this time in 2025, a 3% increase overall.
Early spring permit activity suggests renewed momentum following typical seasonal fluctuations at the start of the year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), national housing activity has remained uneven, influenced by affordability pressures, concerns about economic uncertainty caused by global issues, interest rate conditions, and earlier weather-related disruptions. Against that backdrop, Central Indiana’s March rebound indicates a market that is responding to current demand despite broader national variability.
“Central Indiana’s housing market is showing resilience as we move into the spring season,” said Chris Hancock, CEO of BAGI. “Builders are continuing to adjust to market conditions while maintaining a steady pace of construction in anticipation of increased buyer demand. Despite broader economic concerns, Central Indiana is showing signs of strength, and we remain cautiously optimistic this will continue into the spring homebuying season.”
While activity levels can fluctuate month to month, March’s increase may reflect a broader seasonal shift as building activity ramps up into the Spring buying season. Population growth, relative affordability compared to larger metropolitan areas, and sustained demand for homeownership continue to support housing development in Central Indiana, even as national markets experience periods of volatility.
“Compared to national trends, Central Indiana continues to demonstrate stability with measured growth,” Hancock added. “The fundamentals supporting this market remain strong as we head further into 2026.”
