INDIANAPOLIS (June 23, 2026) — The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) reports that single-family building permit activity across Central Indiana remained remarkably stable through May of 2026, despite continued affordability challenges and economic uncertainty impacting housing markets nationwide. The nine-county region recorded 4,290 permits year-to-date in 2026, a modest decrease compared to 4,304 permits at this time in 2025.
While permit activity moderated slightly in May, the broader trend continues to reflect a balanced market. Nationally, housing affordability remains a significant challenge, with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) reporting that many prospective buyers continue to face elevated housing costs as interest rates remained high during global uncertainty despite modest improvements in affordability during recent quarters. Builder sentiment has shown some signs of decline, as concerns surrounding affordability, construction costs, and interest rates continue to influence housing activity across the country.
“Central Indiana’s housing market continues to demonstrate resilience in an environment that remains challenging for builders and buyers alike,” said Chris Hancock, CEO of BAGI. “While affordability pressures persist nationally, our region continues to adjust to support long-term housing demand.”
Population growth, relative affordability compared to larger metropolitan markets, and sustained interest in homeownership continue to provide stability for the Central Indiana housing market. As builders move into the summer construction season, permit activity remains closely aligned with last year’s pace despite ongoing volatility in national housing indicators.
“Compared to broader national housing trends, Central Indiana remains responsive to our community’s needs,” Hancock added. “Our builders are pivoting their marketing strategies and adapting to meet the demands of this everchanging market.”
