Central Indiana Homebuilding Opens 2026 with Modest Permit Growth

INDIANAPOLIS (February 27, 2026) — The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) reports that single-family building permit activity across Central Indiana began 2026 on a positive note compared to the same time last year. The nine-county region recorded 731 permits in January 2026, compared to 700 permits in January 2025, reflecting a strong 4% year-over-year increase and signaling steady demand as the new year gets underway.

Early-year permit activity is showing resilience relative to broader national housing trends. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), single-family permitting and housing starts have remained cautious nationwide as affordability pressures and interest rate conditions continue to influence builder confidence. Against that backdrop, Central Indiana’s year-over-year increase points to a market maintaining forward momentum despite ongoing economic headwinds.

“Central Indiana’s housing market is starting 2026 on solid footing,” said Chris Hancock, CEO of BAGI. “Builders are entering the year with a disciplined approach — carefully managing production, aligning with buyer demand, and responding thoughtfully to evolving market conditions.”

While activity levels vary month to month across the region, January’s increase suggests continued interest in new home construction. Population growth, relative affordability compared to larger metropolitan areas, and sustained demand for homeownership continue to support housing development in Central Indiana, even as national markets experience more tempered activity.

“Compared to national trends, Central Indiana continues to demonstrate stability and measured growth,” Hancock added. “Those fundamentals provide confidence as builders and buyers move further into 2026.”
